A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later - with a notch or without one. Dictera doesn't run on Intel Macs. The on-device speech and AI models run on your Mac; the larger ones need a few gigabytes of free disk space, and the app shows each one's size before it downloads.

Yes. On a Mac without a notch, and on an external display, Dictera draws a stand-in notch at the top center of the screen - the same size as the built-in one, if your Mac has one. It opens when you point at it and shows the same strips as the real thing: dictation, the song that's playing, a timer. If you'd rather keep the menu bar in sight, choose the Pill shape in Settings ▸ Notch, which floats just below it. See what's in the notch.

Speech is recognized on your Mac and never uploaded - in dictation, the AI Assistant and meeting notes alike - and it's never saved as a recording. (A screen recording you make from the notch carries sound only if you switch that on.) The one time sound is used online is Recognize Song in the notch: when you press it, Shazam gets a fingerprint of the sound, not a recording. Your text stays on your Mac too, unless you connect your own cloud AI provider or the Claude Code CLI engine, and Dictera warns you when you set either up. A few notch features, such as the weather and cover art, go online; the Security page lists exactly what goes where, and the Privacy Policy covers the rest.
